What We Do

BIBLE CLUBS

We are thankful for the more than 1800 children that are being reached weekly in the different Bible clubs that we run in communities, schools, pre-primary schools, aftercare centres and on farms in the Helderberg basin area.

Statistics show that more than 80% of people who follow Christ, does that before the age of 14 years. It is therefore very strategic to focus specifically on this age group.

Many of the children come from poor communities with many challenges such as violence, alcoholism, drugs and negative peer pressure.

We pray that children can be mentored to grow spiritually and develop Godly characters in order to be spiritually resilient and to stand strong in the midst of challenging circumstances.

Children from some of the Bible Clubs says:
  • “I used to think that God was a fairy tale, but now I know better”
    “I’m now a believer”
  • “You have encouraged me to pray more and not get worried that someone will laugh and I can just be free to talk to God.”
  • “The stories you have taught made the Bible 10 times more clear for me… I will remember it till my heart stops pumping.”
  • “Thank you for teaching us about God and the miracles He does and the way He sacrificed His own Son for us and His love.”
  • “I learned a lot of things, I came closer to God.”
  • “Thank you for teaching us how to use a Bible properly.”
  • “I wasn’t very interested in God but now I am.”
  • “My father says that God doesn’t exist – but I believe in Him.”
  • “The coming holiday I’m going to take up the challenge and read the Bible when I wake up instead of watching TV….”

TRAINING

Training opportunities are presented on a regular basis. Quarterly workshops are held to equip Bible club leaders and people in children’s work. Practical ideas are shared on how to teach the truths of the Word of God on a child’s level through Bible lessons, games, and other creative ideas. Volunteers can then present this weekly in their Bible clubs or children’s church.

We also offer an assistant training program for pre-primary school teachers in order to help them to establish a Bible education curriculum in their schools. This includes activities that focus on preparing children for school readiness, through using the book “The colours tell a story” by KidsXpress. This program has been established in a number of pre-primary schools in Xhosa and Afrikaans communities.

Informal training opportunities, like parent workshops and small group training sessions, are organised on a regular basis.

Some of the Xhosa teachers who attended the training said:
“It helped us to have a better understanding of the message of the Bible, of what happened many years ago and after Jesus was born. The ideas are so useful because they integrate general things that are happening in our daily lives. Our children have grown in knowing God and how the Bible teaches us how to live our lives. They learnt about how special they are to God and how to talk to God. The rhymes, activities and games in the book helped them to grow in various skills and have improved their language.”

CAMPS

We organise camps and outings for the children from our Bible clubs every year. This is a highlight for the children, as many of them come from poor communities where they do not have many opportunities.

The camps and outings provide precious opportunities for building deeper relationships and disciple making. Weekend programs are packed with fun activities, Bible teaching, small group discussions, watching a Biblical movie, praise and worship time, creative activities and playing games. The devoted kitchen crew loves to spoil the children with nutritious meals and treats and the children always complain that the weekend has been too short!

Older children are given the opportunity to become team leaders and are mentored to develop leadership skills. We also organise camps specifically for teenagers who had been in Bible clubs since primary school.

Some children who attended the camps said:
  • “I am going to keep on praying and reading the Bible, because on this camp I learned more about Jesus.”
  • “I will remember that God always loves me and I belong to Him.”
  • “The most important thing is that Jesus should be first in your life.”
  • “I learned to be respectful, obedient and work well together in a team.”
  • “I learned that God can change your heart and that I could become God’s child.”
  • “Thank you for teaching us how to use a Bible properly.”
  • “We as teenagers have many choices in life. Sometime we make the wrong choices and do not think what
Jesus would have done. But God will always receive you with open arms when you come back to Him.”
  • “I enjoyed the treasure hunt, games, singing and food most of all.”

HELP IN COMMUNITIES

We are thankful that we can be involved in the spreading of food parcels, especially during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. It gives us the opportunity to show God’s love through caring for people in need. A gospel tract is also included in the food parcels.

Vegetable garden “starter kits” for children are distributed in the communities. The kits contain instructions, different vegetable seeds and some potting soil. A tract with the Gospel message and a Bible story are also included.

We are also involved at some soup kitchens in Sir Lowry’s Pas Village. The children receive food and also a short message daily. Some needy families are supported on a regular basis through funds that has been donated for specific needs.
